Bringing Art and Science Together
Working closely with architects, builders, designers, and homeowners, Mark Dorsey, Professional Engineer, owner of Medallion Pool Company, is in the business of turning his clients’ outdoor living dreams into reality.
The Asheville, NC-based company, founded in 1972 and a member of Master Pools Guild, specializes in the design, engineering, and construction of outdoor living environments including pools, spas, and water features, as well as outdoor kitchen and entertainment areas, for residential, commercial, and institutional properties around the world.
Dorsey sees himself as both artisan and engineer. ”I approach every project with two principles in mind,” he says: “To integrate and balance watershape design with the surrounding environment and architectures, and to apply our engineering expertise and processes to every detail in order to achieve sound design, construction, and sustainability for our clients’ ultimate enjoyment.”
The Cat’s Meow Pool is but one example of Medallion Pool’s innovative projects. Built on the property of a mountaintop castle estate outside Asheville, this breathtaking design combines exquisite craftsmanship, materials, and state- of-the-art equipment.
“Many elements have come together to build what is one of the most advanced and over-the-top outdoor areas available in any setting, made even more spectacular with its mountain incline and stunning views,” says Dorsey.
This 45,000-gallon, 77-foot curved infinity edge pool features multiple usage areas seamlessly incorporated into both the pool and spa. “This project isn’t ‘just a pool,’” says Dorsey. Rather, it’s an outdoor living and entertainment area with integrated, manmade waterfalls (totaling more than 300 linear feet down the mountain), an in-pool, perimeter edge spa, perimeter edge children’s play area, in-water bar seating, and wet deck, all of which, says Dorsey, create a sleek and sophisticated contrast to the mountain vista and home architecture.
And pool-time doesn’t end when the sun goes down. The pool comes to life at night with integrated lighting systems and, for an added wow factor, an in-pool fiber optic lighting system. Add an outdoor kitchen that would be the envy of any chef (indoors or out!), a tennis court, and an outdoor Japanese hibachi grill overlooking the entire vista, and it’s no wonder this project has been named the Cat’s Meow, fulfilling as it does the ultimate dream of outdoor mountain living.
