amed by Robb Report as the most influential pool designer in the world, Skip Phillips, owner of Pool Spa Technologies, lead designer and former owner of Questar Pools and Spas, and consultant for Pure Stainless Steel Pools in Canada, is said to deliver “a palpable elegance and a sleek aesthetic.”

This vanishing-edge pool combines free-form and geometic-style features to create a graceful sweep. Don’t be fooled: this pool is far from a simple creation. Built on a hill overlooking coastal San Diego, this pool’s clean lines, along with the sweeping curve of its vanishing edge and the spare landscaping, play a key role in a carefully planned design to create harmony. Notice how the water flowing from the bowl feature adds vitality to the setting. Designed by Skip Phillips in conjunction with Island Architects, built by Questar Pools.

The waterscape artist and industry expert, who is based in San Diego, California and Tyler, Texas, places as much emphasis on structure and hydraulics as he does aesthetics—the latter of which have been attributed to his ability to make water “dance.”

Designs by Phillips are marked by a seamless fluidity between the natural environs and the constructed landscape. In fact, he views the pool as an architectural extension of the home.

This Lautner-edged perimeter-overflow pool is a multiple gold medal winning design and the perfect serene spot, featuring floating step stones and a diving patio made of Bisazza tile. This dazzling waterscape, created by leader of cutting-edge aquatic design Questar, also includes a Grando automatic pool cover, helping to save energy, cut costs, and ensure crystal-clear water.

“If someone walks into the backyard and feels the environment connects and that it’s a great space to be in, then we did the right thing,” notes Phillips. “Fire, food, and water are design tenets for defining the principles of what draws someone to a destination; they, and reflective and audible qualities, are my primary design philosophies.”

Frequently, Phillips travels in search of innovative materials and applications that inform his signature waterscapes. Natural stone and glass figure prominently in his work, which has been featured in Deborah K. Dietsch’s Dream Pools, as well as in magazines like San Diego, Decor & Style, San Diego Home & Garden, Custom Builder and Home. His designs also have been the subject of multiple national television profiles.

A custom home and pool built in the Okanagan region of British Columbia, the residence sits on the western side of Okanagan Lake, which serves as the backdrop for the vanishing-edge pool and perimeter overflow spa. The pool and spa complement the scenery by integrating blues, greens, and browns into the color scheme. Designed by Questar Pools, Built by Valley Pool & Spa, Kelowna, B.C.

Known primarily for his innovations in vanishing-edge and other water-in-transit design details, Phillips also is an internationally recognized educator whose focus is the intricate cosmetic and mechanical details relating to more complex pool and spa designs. Pool Spa Technologies also specializes in BioNova® Natural Pools that are chemical-free and ecologically friendly.

Today, Phillips and Pool Spa Technologies continue to push the leading edge of aquatic design. A tireless critic of the rank-and-file swimming pool and spa industry, Phillips constantly works to elevate standards for design, engineering and construction.

For innovative designs and dazzling waterscapes, Pool Spa Technologies is the company to call.
