Succulent Landscaping Ideas: How to Plant and Care for Succulents Outdoors

Expert tips for growing succulents around pools and patios, including the best varieties, care advice, and low-maintenance companion plants.

Succulents bring a variety of benefits into the home. Along with purifying the air, boosting our moods, and decreasing stress, they also add humidity to the air and beauty to our homes. We wondered if we could bring their magic outdoors, so we asked Paris Lalicata, Head of Plant Education and Community at The Sill, for guidance on planting and caring for succulents around pools and patios.

Are succulents a good choice to plant around a pool? Why?

Succulents are a great choice to plant around a pool due to their diverse colors, shapes, and textures which complement the modern, clean lines of a pool area. They also thrive in bright, sunny areas where pools are usually built and are drought-tolerant.

What are some specific succulents that are ideal for planting/placing poolside?

If you are planting succulents in the ground or leaving them in containers outdoors year-round, you want to choose those that are hardy to your region so they can survive the winters. If there are succulents that are not designated for your hardiness zones you can plant them in pots but bring them indoors for the winter months.

The specific succulents will be completely dependent on your region, but some good examples include Echeveria, Agave, Aloe, Euphorbia, Cacti, Sempervivum, and Sedum varieties.

Do they grow better in the ground or in pots?

They grow well both in the ground and in pots as long as they get the right conditions and care.

Do succulents thrive on patios?

Yes! As long as they are placed in a sunny location and watered when they have dried out.

Any top choices for patios?

Can you give a few tips on how to care for succulents outdoors?

Water them sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Since they are drought tolerant avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

What are the best conditions to place/plant succulents outdoors?

Succulents require plenty of direct sunlight, ideally 6-8 hours a day, depending on the species, and need well-draining soil. Most will also prefer warm, dry environments so they should be placed where they’ll get ample light but minimal moisture.

What are some other plants to combine with succulents to create a lovely and low-maintenance landscape?

Lavender, Russian Sage, Yucca, and ornamental grasses are great choices to combine with other plants.

Succulents are more than just stylish—they’re a smart, sustainable choice for outdoor spaces. Whether planted poolside, arranged in pots on the patio, or paired with other drought-tolerant favorites like lavender or ornamental grasses, succulents offer beauty with minimal upkeep. By selecting region-appropriate varieties and giving them the sun and drainage they crave, you can enjoy a vibrant, low-maintenance landscape that thrives all season long.
