Reimagining the Pool for a Modern Aesthetic
Located in the Lake Highlands neighborhood of Dallas, this complete backyard transformation began with a bold redesign of the existing pool. The original shell was structurally sound, providing a solid base for strategic enhancements rather than requiring a full tear-out. Angled corners were squared off to modernize the look, while a flush spa and wet deck were added to elevate functionality and relaxation.
New benches and steps integrate seamlessly into the updated form, and architectural water features enhance both the soundscape and visual interest. A raised wall behind the spa includes a sheer descent feature, creating a connection between the pool and the nearby outdoor living area. Along the pool’s eastern edge, a 24-inch raised porcelain-tile wall with LED-lit water feature draws the eye across the entire space, echoing the home’s painted brick in tone but introducing a fresh texture.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow with a Purpose-Built Room
Replacing an old composite deck, the new covered outdoor room mirrors its original footprint while offering significantly more comfort and usability. The flat-roof structure, finished in Hardie board to match the home’s exterior, incorporates skylights and high ceilings to maximize daylight. Motorized bug screens, ceiling fans, and recessed electric heaters ensure the space can be enjoyed in all seasons.

Adjacent to the spa, a custom brick column hides the outdoor kitchen from view and visually anchors the room. This small but efficient kitchen includes a Lynx grill/smoker combo, beverage fridge, trash drawer, and storage—all topped with a durable Dekton surface ideal for outdoor entertaining.
Layered Elements and Smart Screening Add Style and Function
Thoughtful wall layering adds rhythm and structure to the backyard design. The same porcelain tile used in the pool feature wall extends to enclose the fire pit area, creating built-in bench seating for gatherings. At the far end, a 6-foot painted brick wall discreetly hides pool equipment, maintaining the sleek aesthetic.

To create a unified environment, synthetic turf now wraps the entire perimeter—providing a pet- and child-friendly surface with year-round appeal. The perimeter fencing, painted in Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore, offers a sophisticated contrast while allowing the lush, minimalist landscaping to take center stage. A custom steel gate provides both security and flexibility, opening the driveway into the pool area when needed and keeping the family’s dog, Rosie, safely on patrol.
A Backyard Built for Living
Completed in October 2024, this outdoor living project delivers a modern and highly functional retreat for its Dallas homeowners. From the refined pool design to the integrated kitchen and all-season room, every element was designed with everyday enjoyment and seamless entertaining in mind.
