Private Pools and Desert Views: Grand Hyatt Indian Wells Resort & Villas

Luxury villas, plunge pools, and a waterpark-style pool make this desert resort easy to enjoy.

I headed to Grand Hyatt Indian Wells Resort & Villas looking for a break—and some space. After a major renovation, the resort promised expanded outdoor areas, redesigned pools, and private villas. What I didn’t expect was how much I’d appreciate the mix of privacy and convenience.

I stayed in one of the resort’s private villas, and it became my base for a few days of downtime. Tucked away from the main resort buildings, the villa had its own fenced-in backyard, a shaded terrace with dining space, and the best part: a plunge pool. Having a pool to myself was a luxury I didn’t take for granted. I started each morning with a quiet soak and ended most evenings with my feet in the water and a drink in hand.

The villa was designed for low-key living—grill included. You can request a chef-prepped BBQ kit and have it delivered. Cocktail service is available, too, so everything you need can come right to your terrace. If you’re looking for a vacation setup where you can completely unplug without feeling isolated, the villas deliver.

Beyond the villa, the resort’s $64 million renovation is clearly focused on maximizing outdoor experiences. The pool complex is extensive and built for all types of guests—quiet lounging, family fun, or something in between. There are shaded cabanas, plenty of deck space, and multiple pools, including one with twisting waterslides that were more fun than I expected. They’re aimed at kids, but I’m glad I gave them a try—about 20 times!

Families will likely spend most of their time here—between the slides and splash areas, it’s easy to keep everyone entertained. But even if you’re traveling solo or as a couple, there’s enough space to find a quiet corner by the adults-only pool to read or just take in the desert air.

The fitness center is solid—fully equipped with machines, free weights, and stretching areas. It’s not flashy, but it has everything you need for a straightforward workout. For a change of pace, I grabbed one of the beach cruisers available on-site and rode around the property. It’s a great way to take in the desert landscape at a slower pace, especially in the early morning or around sunset

I also spent some quiet time at the resort’s Agua Serena Spa—not for a treatment, but for the sauna and garden areas. The spa’s dry sauna was a welcome reset after a long day outdoors. Afterward, I lingered in the private garden patio with mountain views. It’s a peaceful spot, with just enough space and quiet to feel like you’ve stepped away from the activity of the main resort.

As for food, I made a reservation at Tía Carmen, the resort’s signature restaurant by Chef Angelo Sosa. The menu leans into Southwestern flavors with a fresh, seasonal approach. I ordered the roasted purple yams with lime crema—simple but perfectly done—and the bucatini with mushrooms, which had an unexpected depth. It was a standout meal, thoughtfully prepared and nicely plated, without trying too hard.

I also had a casual lunch at the adult pool. Lighter fare, quick service, and shaded tables made it a great midday stop. The cauliflower ceviche was a surprise hit—fresh, tangy, and ideal for the heat.

Overall, what struck me about Grand Hyatt Indian Wells was its balance. It’s a resort that can handle families, couples, and solo travelers without feeling pulled in too many directions. The updates aren’t flashy, but they’re smart: more space, better flow, and small luxuries where they matter—like that plunge pool or having BBQ and cocktails brought to your door.

If you’re planning a Palm Springs or desert getaway and want privacy without giving up amenities, the villa experience is a strong choice. And if you’re a food traveler looking for a meal worth writing home about, don’t skip Tía Carmen.
