Light Up Your Outdoors: Expert Tips to Brighten Your Backyard

Lighting Designer Lucy Dearborn Shares Ideas to Enhance Safety, Ambiance, and Style in Your Outdoor Spaces

Are you looking to spend more time outdoors, enjoying nature, fresh air, and the beauty of your backyard? We thought so! We sat down with lighting expert Lucy Dearborn of Lucia Lighting & Design, who shared some bright ideas and insights into the wonderful world of outdoor lighting.

What should homeowners consider when planning outdoor lighting?

Layers of light are essential! We love using path lighting for wayfinding. Rechargeable lights on your dining table add sparkle. Lighting around the pool deck helps define spaces, and floodlighting is crucial for both safety and security.

  • Landscape lighting for outdoor living areas, kitchens, and pools
  • Rechargeable table and floor lamps to add light in spaces without power
  • Backlighting stone in outdoor kitchens for statement-making sparkle
  • Oversized fixtures at main entrances to say a bold “welcome!”

Can you break down the different types of outdoor lighting?

  • Incandescent bulbs (traditional) are rarely used outdoors today due to high energy consumption.
  • Halogen lights were popular in landscape lighting for their compact size but are being phased out in favor of more efficient options.
  • LEDs (light-emitting diodes) now dominate outdoor lighting. They’re durable (even with lawnmowers nearby), long-lasting, and energy-efficient, offering high lumen output per watt.

How can you make your outdoor kitchen shine?

Treat your outdoor kitchen like your indoor one—add layers of light! Think pendants, sconces, and toe-kick lighting. Consider color-changing LEDs for added flair. Make sure your lights are dimmable and on separate switches. Remember, a little light goes a long way at night.

What’s the best way to light up pool steps?

You can install recessed lighting in each step to guide swimmers safely into the water. Alternatively, post lights around the pool’s perimeter can provide a broad flood of light.

Can you mix metal finishes outdoors?

Absolutely—mix them up! Solid brass and copper lighting pairs beautifully in coastal environments. Coated black and stainless steel create a chic, modern contrast, while black and brass add warmth and style to farmhouse-inspired settings.

How can lighting connect with natural elements?

Use lighting to bring nature closer. Highlight grasses, trees, flowers, and stonework to transform your landscape into a serene, visual retreat—whether you’re relaxing outdoors or admiring the view from inside. Rather than staring into darkness at night, you’ll see a beautifully lit natural “room.”

Tips on light placement and how many you need?

We always start by asking homeowners how they use their outdoor space. Where do you enter the home? Are there special trees, sculptures, or sentimental features to highlight? We emphasize wayfinding, safety, and security—while keeping it subtle. A little light truly goes a long way! Fixtures are often spaced 15–20 feet apart. Be sure to light up dark corners for a sense of calm, and don’t forget to add a few rechargeable table lamps for a cozy ambiance and easy cleanup after entertaining.
