Landry Design Group (LDG) was asked to build a home in Southern California for empty nesters who love to entertain. Their desire was to create an environment with a strong connection with nature, that embraces indoor-outdoor living, and showcases the spectacular views.
To accomplish this, LDG used curved walls of Amalfi limestone to create a warm and unique façade as well as define the circulation, while orthogonal walls of Western red cedar create the spaces. Cedar was also deployed for architectural elements such as clerestories and curved ceilings, with rhythmic braces for support. Large expanses of retractable glass allow transparency to the elements.
Juxtaposed with the rough hillside and jagged mountains beyond, a leisurely infinity-edge lap pool sweeps around the terrace. A glass stair and waterfall connect the upper-level spa with the large pool below, concealing a hidden grotto and offering a variety of settings where the clients can enjoy the sunshine and sunsets with their family and friends. Mosaic tiles in various colors were carefully selected to recreate the effect of light bouncing and reflecting off the water below.
