We’ve all heard the saying that home is where the heart is. It’s also where the backyard is and where more and more homeowners are opting to hang out and create their own five-star boutique resort. Why go through the hassle of travel when you can create a level of comfort, privacy, and guest experience found at boutique resorts in your own backyard?
“Luxury outdoor living has become an extension of the home, where families can relax, entertain, recharge and make lasting memories without leaving their property. Many of our clients tell us they want the feeling of a boutique resort, but designed specifically around the way their family lives,” says Nick Fuentes, CEO and Founder of Westmod. The growing desire for personalized outdoor environments is reshaping backyard design, with every element carefully planned to create spaces that feel intentional, immersive, and uniquely suited to each homeowner.
Start with Lifestyle
Before selecting materials or amenities, Fuentes says homeowners should begin by thinking about how they use their outdoor space. His team encourages clients to consider four important questions: How do we actually live outdoors? How do we entertain family and friends? Where will people naturally gather throughout the space? What memories do we want this backyard to create over the next 10 to 20 years?
Those answers almost always shape the best designs, according to Fuentes. Rather than building around individual features, the most successful projects begin with the family’s lifestyle and allow every design decision to support the way they want to live, relax, and entertain for years to come.
A Thoughtful, Cohesive Design
The most successful outdoor environments don’t rely on one standout feature. Instead, every element works together to create a complete experience.
“The pool, landscaping, shade structures, kitchen, seating areas, lighting and fire features all work together to create an experience rather than feeling like separate additions,” says Vinny Biancamano, owner of Hotshot Hardscape and Pools.

Privacy is equally important in creating that destination feeling. “Homeowners are using mature landscaping, privacy walls, strategically placed trees, custom shade structures and cabanas to make the space feel more secluded,” says Biancamano. He also sees comfortable outdoor furnishings, multiple conversation areas, integrated lighting and sound, outdoor televisions, misting systems, water features, and high-quality materials that complement the home’s architecture. Thoughtful lighting is especially important because it completely changes the mood of the yard after sunset.
Outdoor kitchens have evolved well beyond a built-in grill. Biancamano says his team is essentially taking everything homeowners love about their indoor kitchens and bringing it outdoors. Instead of designing a basic BBQ station, they are creating fully functional kitchens where people can prepare, cook, serve, and clean up without constantly going back inside.
Pools themselves have also become increasingly experiential. “Homeowners are requesting large Baja shelves with loungers, built-in seating, raised spas, infinity or perimeter-overflow edges, waterfalls, deck jets and custom water features,” says Biancamano. The surrounding spaces play an equally important role in creating that resort atmosphere. Oversized decking, shaded lounge spaces, landscape lighting, and convenient access to food, drinks, and restrooms allow people to comfortably spend the entire day outside.
“The goal is to make the pool area feel like the center of a private resort rather than simply a place to swim,” says Biancamano.

Fire features continue to be an important part of the overall experience. “A fire pit surrounded by comfortable seating can feel like its own destination within the yard,” says Biancamano, adding that an outdoor fireplace can help define a lounge area and make it feel like an extension of the home. “Fire and water used together are especially impactful because they create the kind of layered, memorable atmosphere people associate with luxury resorts.”
Flexible Spaces for Modern Living
Flexibility has become one of the defining characteristics of today’s luxury outdoor spaces. “People are looking beyond beautiful pools. They want spaces that create experiences, bring family and friends together, support wellness, and can be enjoyed year-round. They expect their outdoor environment to be as thoughtfully designed as the interior of their home,” says Cecilia Heard, President of TRESSS®.
She notes her team sees homeowners placing tremendous value on features that maximize every square foot of their property while maintaining a clean architectural aesthetic.
“Our movable pool floor transforms a swimming pool into an elegant, walkable outdoor living space, allowing homeowners to entertain, dine, exercise, relax, or simply enjoy their backyard—even when they’re not swimming,” says Heard.
Homeowners are looking for outdoor environments that transition effortlessly throughout the day, from a morning wellness retreat to family recreation and elegant evening entertaining. Rather than designing spaces around a single activity, the focus has shifted toward flexible environments that adapt to changing lifestyles.
Heard points to a recent project that incorporated a TRESSS® movable pool floor, transforming a compact backyard into a multifunctional outdoor environment. When the pool is closed, the surface becomes an elegant patio where the family can entertain, dine, relax, or simply enjoy their outdoor space. Instead of choosing between a pool and a patio, they were able to enjoy both within the same footprint.

“I believe the future of luxury outdoor living is centered on adaptability,” says Heard.
The Finishing Touches
Creating a boutique resort atmosphere doesn’t end with the architecture. Furnishings, fabrics, accessories, and decorative details all contribute to the overall experience.
Sozan Hughes, Vice President and Creative Director at Solana Outdoor Living and Ryan Hughes Design, says she and her husband, Ryan, set out to elevate outdoor spaces when they first launched their business two decades ago. Today, they continue to see an uptick in clients looking to elevate their outdoor living environments.
High-end fabrics, fibers, and textures create the layers of luxury found in five-star resorts. Hughes says that luxurious fabrics like Bouclé and silk, which used to be used exclusively in fashion by designers, are now being used for everyday living outdoors.
She is also enthusiastic about the growing variety of outdoor textiles available today. Weather-resistant pillows that are easy to clean and resistant to water and stains now feature hand-finished details including fringes, appliques, and rope. Seasonal collections even allow homeowners to celebrate holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving outdoors with coordinated décor.
Another favorite design approach is incorporating artwork as a backsplash in outdoor kitchens. Rather than relying on tile or granite, artwork creates an elevated aesthetic that feels especially resort-like. Hughes also appreciates seeing design become more prominent in outdoor kitchens, with stainless steel appliances, refined cabinetry, and colors like yellow, green, and blue creating personalized spaces.

She also encourages homeowners to create smaller outdoor destinations throughout the yard. Whether through a pair of oversized chairs with an ottoman, rug, side table, and solar lamp or by incorporating a sunshade, umbrella, or faux green wall, these thoughtfully layered vignettes help establish the intimate character often found at boutique resorts.
Amenities that Elevate the Experience
While pools remain the centerpiece of many projects, Fuentes says it’s often the supporting features that elevate a backyard into a true destination. Some of the amenities he is incorporating more frequently include detached gyms, covered lounges and dining spaces, fire features, architectural water features, hidden pop-up televisions, architecturally integrated pool slides, in-ground trampolines, smart lighting and audio systems, wellness-focused spaces including spas, cold plunges, and outdoor showers, along with privacy landscaping and layered architectural screening.
Ultimately, however, the success of an outdoor space isn’t determined by the size of the budget or the number of amenities.
“The most successful outdoor spaces aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets. They’re the ones that make people lose track of time. When guests say, ‘Let’s stay another hour,’ you’ve designed something special.”
For Fuentes, that philosophy captures the true purpose behind today’s luxury outdoor living spaces.
“At the end of the day, that’s really our goal. We aren’t simply designing outdoor spaces. We’re designing experiences where families create memories for years to come,” says Fuentes.
