The challenge of designing a pool at Surf & Sand Laguna Beach is that it competes with one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the world.
Fortunately, the resort’s oceanfront pool doesn’t try to outshine the Pacific Ocean. Instead, it embraces its setting, creating a space where guests can enjoy the comforts of a luxury resort while remaining completely connected to the beach and the waves just beyond. Following the property’s recent transformation, the refreshed pool experience feels more intentional than ever, serving as one of the resort’s most compelling gathering places.
Located directly on the sand in Laguna Beach, Surf & Sand occupies a position that few coastal resorts can claim. While many oceanfront properties offer views of the water, this resort is built at the water’s edge, creating an unusually intimate relationship with the coastline. The pool deck takes full advantage of that location, offering unobstructed views of the Pacific and immediate access to the beach below.

During my stay, the pool became a natural home base between other activities. Whether returning from a morning walk along the shoreline, enjoying an afternoon with a book, or relaxing after a spa treatment, I found myself gravitating back to the deck. The atmosphere strikes an appealing balance between sophistication and relaxation, reflecting the laid-back character that has long defined Laguna Beach.
The recently completed transformation enhanced many areas throughout the resort, including guestrooms, dining venues, wellness spaces, and public areas. The refreshed pool environment feels aligned with the broader design vision, emphasizing natural materials, coastal tones, and an overall sense of connection to the surrounding landscape. What makes the pool particularly successful is its relationship with the ocean beyond it.
Rather than serving as a self-contained destination, the pool acts as an extension of the beach experience. Guests can spend an hour lounging beside the water before wandering down to the shoreline, then return to their chairs without ever feeling disconnected from the ocean. The constant sound of waves provides a soothing backdrop throughout the day, while sea breezes naturally cool the deck and reinforce the sense of place.
From nearly every vantage point, the Pacific remains in view. Surfers paddle beyond the break, pelicans glide across the horizon, and changing light transforms the ocean throughout the day. The scenery creates a dynamic backdrop that is never static and never repetitive.
As someone who spends a great deal of time covering luxury pools and outdoor living spaces, I am often drawn to projects that establish a meaningful relationship with their surroundings. The most memorable aquatic environments do not attempt to dominate the landscape; they enhance it. Surf & Sand’s pool achieves precisely that. The design allows the coastline to remain the focal point while providing guests with a comfortable, thoughtfully curated place from which to enjoy it.
My stay followed a simple rhythm. Mornings began with walks along the beach, followed by time spent beside the pool watching the waves roll ashore. Lunches stretched comfortably into afternoons, and there was never a sense of needing to rush from one activity to the next. The setting naturally encourages guests to slow down and embrace the restorative qualities of the coast.
One afternoon, I visited Aquaterra Spa for a signature facial with Carol, a treatment that left me feeling thoroughly refreshed. The spa’s recent enhancements complement the broader resort experience, emphasizing wellness and relaxation through treatments inspired by the surrounding environment. Following the facial, returning to a lounge chair beside the pool felt like the perfect continuation of the day.

Dining also played an important role in the experience. One evening, I enjoyed the chef’s tasting menu at Splashes, the resort’s signature restaurant. Located just steps from the sand, the venue offers spectacular ocean views alongside a menu inspired by Southern California’s coastal influences. As the sun set beyond the horizon and waves crashed beneath the restaurant’s windows, the meal became another reminder of how deeply connected the property is to its setting.

Back in my guest room later that evening, I opened the sliding glass doors and listened to the ocean from my balcony. Like many of the resort’s accommodations, the room sits so close to the shoreline that guests can hear every wave breaking below. The experience reinforced a theme that emerged throughout my stay: at Surf & Sand, the ocean is not an amenity. It is the foundation upon which every aspect of the guest experience is built. That philosophy extends directly to the pool.

Many luxury resorts attempt to create environments that feel removed from the outside world. Surf & Sand takes a different approach. The pool invites guests to engage with the surrounding landscape, offering comfort and service without isolating them from the natural beauty that drew them there in the first place.
For outdoor living enthusiasts, there is an important lesson in that approach. Successful aquatic environments are not defined solely by their size, shape, or amenities. They succeed when they create a meaningful relationship between people and place. The most memorable pools become part of a larger experience, enhancing how guests interact with the landscape rather than distracting from it.
The Pacific may be the star attraction, but the pool deck at Surf & Sand provides one of the best seats in the house.
